Our Journey

When you find the chance to mix food, wine, and the cooking of that food together, you really should take it.  That is exactly what you will find at Cakebread Cellars, where they offer cooking classes as well as producing some of the most outstanding premium wines in Anderson Valley.  Whether you simply love wine or you’re interested in learning about pairing foods with wines, you’ll find your place at Cakebread among the amazing staff that runs this lovely Wine Cellar.

Not only are these folks well versed in the winemaking craft, they’re also very talented in the culinary arts.  This connection is becoming even more common than it used to be as people come to realize how fun it can be to learn how to cook meals that pair well with the wines they enjoy.  While it used to be commonplace to have skill in the area of cooking, that talent has fallen off with the advent of microwaves and fast food.  Knowing that there is a winery out there willing to put in the time to bring these skills back to people is great.  The fact that they are teaching those same students how to pair wines with those meals is outstanding!

How long has Cakebread Cellars been around?

Several decades lie within Cakebread Cellars’ history.  Starting in 1972, when the owners nearly jokingly offered to buy Sturdivant Ranch in Rutherford, the winery has quickly grown into what it is today.  The first blocks of vines were planted in 1972 and that has grown to a rough total of 1,100 acres of land, with over 500 acres currently planted in vines of various varietals.  The vineyards span across Napa Valley, with a location in Anderson Valley as well, and the varieties planted include, but are not limited to:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Chardonnay
  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Semillon
  • Sauvignon Musque
  • Merlot
  • Syrah
  • Grenache
  • Pinot Noir

As we said, this is not a full list of their plantings, but with so many acres of vineyards, it’s hard to know if they might even have a few unexpected varietals hidden away in there somewhere.  We’re sure they do, as they seem to come up with some of the most delicious premium wines on the market and some of their blends hint at the unique crossings.  We’re proud to say that Cakebread Cellars provides both amazing wines and great programs that compliment their tastings as well, bringing out the best of both worlds and bringing together those of the culinary industry and the wine industry.
