Crafting Stout foundations

Our Journey

When it comes to crafting stout beer, there are some craft breweries that really have it figured out. The amazing stouts they brew are delicious and we’re happy to mention the brews we’ve found that really catch our attention.  We’ve featured a variety of craft breweries from around the world in the past, such as Samuel Smith’s Brewing Company whose Organic craft beers have gained enough interest to spark a following around the world.  Today we want to tell you about some of the amazing brews from around the United States that we think are great.

Crafting stout beer is not a singular defined method

Depending on the type of stout you prefer, the foundations of the brew could be very different.  For example, Russian Imperial Stout and Imperial Stout have slightly different foundations, even though they originated in the same area.  Many brew types were created during a time when brews were either consumed shortly after creation, aged in barrels for a short period, or in the case of Russian Imperial Stouts, they were brewed with the intent of shipping long distances.

Crafting stout beer is a popular practice that crosses not only several centuries, but also several countries and cultures.  This has resulted in a type of brew that varies in bitterness, texture, flavor, and ABV as well.  The ingredients used and the concentrations of each can greatly change the way each brew turns out and some are also great for aging further in the bottle.  This means that even if a brew doesn’t have quite the smooth texture you desire, it may have in a week or two after aging in the bottle, giving us the chance to taste a brew entirely different from the first bottle.

Crafting stout beer has become popular in the United States and around the world

There are some outstanding stouts on the market today that mimic the styles of old, as well as several that have taken a step or two further from the originals and really amped up the flavor profiles and creamy textures.  We’ve listed several breweries below, along with some of their creations that we think you just might love.  Perhaps there are brews missing from our list that you have found in your own travels.  Make sure to leave us a comment and let us know so we can either add them to our list or feature them in a future post!
