American Black Ale: Dark is Delicious

Our Journey

If you’re a fan of super dark craft beer, then you’re going to love American Black Ales. These brews feature a very dark color, super bitter taste, and a mid-range ABV that will allow you to enjoy a few before you need to say “no more” for proprietary reasons (like the fact that dancing on the pool table isn’t always funny and WILL end up on YouTube). Also, if you really enjoy pairing your craft brews with some great meals, this is a style you can enjoy pairing with a variety of delicious dinners and desserts!

Why go dark?

For those who are enticed by the darker brews, this is a style that really hits the best notes. Most dark craft brews feature a bitterness that contrasts very well with creamy dinners and chocolatey desserts as well. However, that’s not the limit of the pairing possibilities for these lusciously decadent brews. Do you love shrimp? Scallops? Perhaps you really enjoy a great fillet of Orange Roughy for your dinner. Any of these great meals pair really well with this brewing style and we’ve tried several!

Besides the wide variety of pairing options, you will find with these brews, you also have the added bonus of an aromatic, flavorful brew, which is something we all love in the craft beer community. There are plenty of different hop aromas present in these brews, including citrus and floral. Depending on the exact brew you are trying, you may also note some chocolate, coffee, or fruit aromas as well. There are plenty of possible variations in this brewing style, while still remaining true to their general guidelines.

Have you tried any great American Black Ales?

We have tried a few different brews from this brewing style, one of which was Once You Go by Lynnwood Brewing Company. We chose this brew after learning a bit more about the style and checking out what CraftBeer had to say about it as well. If you’ve found any other great brews from this style during your travels, let us know about it in the comments!

We love to hear from our readers and your comment might spark our next feature post. In the meantime, we’ll be hard at work down here in South Florida as we try to get ready for our own opening later this year. We plan to feature some great craft beer once we open, as well as some outstanding premium wines from Pankauski Wine Cellar thanks to our exclusive contract with them, so we hope to see you there! From all of us at West Palm Beach Brewery and Wine Vault, happy tasting!
