Belgian Tripel is worth a taste!

Our Journey

We heard that the Belgian Tripel is a great craft beer style and we simply had to find out if it was true.  Of course, the chance to try yet another style that is gaining popularity in the craft brewing industry is always great, so we added this one to our treasure hunt list for the year.  We were surprised to find that there are quite a few who don’t know what a Belgian Tripel is!  This led us to find a handful of these brews to taste and from there the rest was posting history.

What is a Belgian Tripel craft beer?

Belgian Tripel is a brewing style that originates in (oh the shock) Belgium.  These brews feature a lovely straw to a golden color that is quite dense.  The finish on these brews is often biting, as they tend to be bottle-conditioned, but this is not necessarily unpleasant.  In fact, it’s quite refreshing overall!  Not to mention this feature of these brews fits in well with the slightly spicy taste and complex aroma, making them quite interesting as a whole.  These aren’t the only features of these brews, though, as they clearly have a few others that include:

  • Color:  Pale to light golden with a dense appearance
  • ABV:  The alcohol in these delicious brews tends to be in the higher range from 7% to 10% and up.  However, the alcohol is often hardly noticeable, so you will want to keep an eye on your drinking speed.
  • IBU:  These brews can have quite the biting finish, however, the IBUs tend to stick around 20-45, so you’ll not have to worry about it all too much.  Many of these brews have a mild bitterness rather than a biting one.
  • Finish:  Dry finish with a hint of bitterness that barely lingers

Belgian Tripel craft beer pairs really well with a variety of foods such as:

  • Roasted Chicken or Turkey in traditional style with mashed potatoes, gravy, and all of the trimmings
  • Creamy Beef Stew with freshly roasted vegetables

As well as desserts like:

  • Strawberry Cheesecake
  • Lava Cake
  • Red Velvet Cake with Cream cheese frosting

What Belgian Tripel craft beer should we seek out?

There is a great range of these brews on the market, as well as some very interesting alternative takes on them, too.  We’ve put together a short list of the brews in this style that we tried which were truly excellent and we hope you enjoy them as much as we have.

All three of these brews were absolutely outstanding and really stood up to the Tripel style.  We hope you get a chance to try them.  Remember to stop back and leave us a comment about the different Belgian Tripel craft beer labels you have tried in your travels.  We’d love to hear from you!  In the meantime, from all of us at West Palm Beach Brewery and Wine Vault in South Florida, happy tasting!
