If you’re looking for a vineyard that has ranked as high as 3rd out of over 100 vineyards in the United States, then Au Bon Climat, affectionately known as ABC, is certainly one you will want to visit. Since 1982 they have been creating wines that possess huge character and owe their distinctive personalities to the winemaker, Jim Clendenen. Jim takes his wines to an even higher plateau with his small-batch artisan wines that he has been creating as well.
Besides having some of the most lovely Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Santa Barbara region, this vineyard is known for their famous collection of wines, which can be sampled in their tasting room for a nominal fee. Their selection of wines is quite impressive overall and this has created an absolute need for reservations at the tasting room, though we find that to be a good practice anywhere out of respect for the vineyards.
You’ll also want to take a tour of this beautiful vineyard, as the landscape is well-worth the experience, as is the wealth of knowledge you will gain. Be sure to book your tour well in advance, especially if you are going to be in a large group. The setting of this vineyard is gorgeous and the atmosphere of the vineyard reminds us of an age gone by where love for the grapes was ever-present.
ABC is well-known for the amazing texture and character of their wines. This is partly due to their winemaker’s dedication to creating top-rated premium wines. However, it is also largely due to the absolutely amazing range of blocks they have to select grapes from. With over 1,600 acres of vineyard blocks, Jim would be hard-pressed to NOT find the perfect blocks for his wines.
With the vineyards being situated on some of the most lovely hills in the region, the vines are given ample amounts of quality soil in which to thrive, as well as a microclimate that they simply adore. This has allowed ABC to produce some truly notable wines, such as their 2013 Sauvignon Blanc Stallion, which has been the subject of discussion for quite some time. Considering the fact that Cab is still king, this doesn’t surprise us, as a great Cab is definitely going to gain a lot of attention. However, their 2014 Chardonnay is also exquisite, which has gained them praise throughout the industry and we expect their future wines to do the same.
If you’ve tried any of the amazing wines from this vineyard, be sure to tell us about your experience in the comments. We’d love to hear from you and your story may be the inspiration for our next wine feature. In the meantime, from all of us here at West Palm Beach Brewery and Wine Vault, happy tasting!
