A little bit of wine knowledge can make all of the difference

Our Journey

Varietals are wines produced from a single grape and they are considered classics with a unique flavor. There are some vital elements that should be taken into account anytime you consume wine and it’s necessary you have this knowledge for your benefit.  This helps to understand the nature of the wine.  The more you know about the basics, the more likely you are to be able to select a wine that truly suits you or your event.  Below we have outlined a few important facts that you will need to remember.

  • Alcohol content in Red wine: The debate on the level of alcohol between Red and White wine may continue but based on facts, red wines have more alcohol content than white wine. The body and weight of red wine are higher than white wine, but if you prefer lighter taste of alcohol then you should go for content under 13 percent of alcohol.
  • Wine chilling: Wine chilling typically brings out the taste and makes it more enjoyable to consume when it served straight out of the refrigerator. Most red wines feature great flavor when they are chilled to around 55 degrees Fahrenheit. So it’s better to ensure you place the bottle of wine in the fridge for about an hour before you drink or serve to guests.
  • Tannins in wine: Most wines have tannin in the content which is responsible for the bitter taste with a dry aftermath when you take a sip. Tannins usually come from the skin of grapes, the oak, stems, and the seeds. A classic example is Cabernet Sauvignon. The longer the skin stays in contact with the juice the more it ferments with a stronger taste.
  • Wine Preservation: You need to adhere to the standards set by the wineries regarding the shelf-life of the wine. If you’re unable to finish a bottle of wine at a sitting, you can store it in the fridge or ensure that the cap is tightly screwed.
  • Wine tasting: The best way to get the hang of any wine is to have a taste to see if it agrees with your taste buds, and to determine the wine that best suits you. Hence, lots of wineries provide schedules for wine tasting at a moderate cost to the public. You’ll discover thousands of wine and settle for some after you explore your options.

Knowing just these few things will certainly change your experience when next you visit a tasting room.  However, don’t hesitate to ask questions of the server or other staff.  They are knowledgeable in the industry and sure to impart wisdom that will be of great value to you in the future, even if it only affects your selections for parties and events.
