Take a walk through Switchback Ridge

Our Journey

If you haven’t heard of Switchback Ridge, you certainly need to.  Whether you’re a fan of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, or Merlot, you’ll find a vintage that is just right for you at this lovely winery.  The history of the winery dates back 100 years and is full of family, hard work, and dedication.  That dedication is the reason the location has survived ten decades of industry changes, prohibition, and of course, trend changes.

From start to finish, Switchback Ridge has held its ground

Switchback Ridge already had established vines on the land when it was purchased nearly one hundred years ago.  However, with Prohibition in the air, the Peterson family wisely chose to plant plum orchards in order to sustain their growing family and provide a future for their children that would reap its own harvest over time.  Instead of destroying the established vines, they left them, marking some of the best growing blocks on the property in the process.

Fast forward to 1995, years after the matriarch and patriarch of the family had passed, and the three daughters had continued to work the plum orchards and keep them in perfect order.  The great-grandchildren took over the operation after the passing of their favorite aunt and one, Kelly Peterson, began to work on a promise she had made.

Thus, with the help of a family friend, the first Petite Sirah was produced by Switchback Ridge, a vintage that had lost interest over time in the region.  We’re definitely glad she made good on her word as well because that first bottling led to a future of winemaking that has reached great heights.

Sirah is the herald of a new era for Switchback Ridge

That first wine was so well-received that it led to others.  The terroir of Switchback Ridge is perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and the lovely Petite Sirah that started it all.  Each of their wines features notes that truly distinguish them as premium wines.  From the bold Merlot, rich in flavor and substance, to the distinguished Petite Sirah that is not only a powerhouse right after bottling, but also holds its own for up to 25 years after bottling, the quality found at Switchback Ridge is undeniable.

We hope you get a chance to try one of the vintages of this ageless winery, as we want you to have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the history like we did.  Be sure to pay them a visit, as the experience will leave you feeling as if you’ve stepped back in time, to an era where powerful and engaging wines were at the top of everyone’s list.
